sunset, corniche beach

July 18 sunset, Corniche Beach overlooking Marina Mall.

Hours after my post-birthday celebration, my friends (guests) from Dubai decided to go to Emirates Palace: that is to check the Picasso exhibit and the well-publicized golds and architectural extravaganza inside the Palace (will cost at least USD 27/person to view the entire palace, some areas are open for viewing for free). Lucky us (rather than saying we’re not), we were not allowed to get in since there was an exclusive event held last weekend. We went to the newly opened beach at the Corniche instead. Just in time to catch the sunset.

I am naturally drawn to taking photos of sunset for no particular reason. I don’t know what’s with it, but I do wish that I begun to take one so long ago. It’s interesting to compare shots in different places. These are my treasured ones so far because I caught them in passing and without any editing made:

bacolod sunset

Bacolod Sunset, January 2006. I took these while on my way to the hotel in San Juan, Bacolod, from a weekend get away in Mambukal Falls.

CIMG5940

Lulu Island Sunset, April 2008. Chanced when we were leaving this beautiful beach in Abu Dhabi. Eased the tired feet.

Each rising and setting of the sun must be worth the shots. But there’s something about the sunset that is more appealing. It may connote togetherness, loneliness, serenity, happiness, whatever the case may be.

Any sunset thoughts and/or memories?

black and white forest

My 2008 birthday cake, black and white forest

It’s normal when I get birthday greetings as early as 1st of July. Advance and belated greetings traditionally become alike, since some are saying ‘belated’ when it’s actually still a week before the exact date. I don’t mind the gap though as long as it’s within the timeline. :) And I shall not be surprised as I get greetings on the 17th of August, that’s exactly a month after the correct date. On the other hand, I have friends who don’t observe birthdays due to religious reasons But mind you, they have their means of remembering it.

So I had my first birthday celebration away from the Philippines. Away from so many people and stuff that I am used to. Incidentally, I had crazy muscle pains. What a timing. Maybe the improper sitting /posture and other unhealthy habits accumulated and wanted to scream, err, greet me. Salonpas patches eased it for a while.

I invited at least 15 people – from the office and old and new friends off-work to celebrate with me over lunch at home. It was a simple yet fun-filled as we feasted on Filipino food: pansit sotanghon (for long life!), kare-kare, tokwa’t baboy in tausi, lumpiang sariwa, lemon-marinated fried chicken, grilled pork barbecue, fruit salad and cake for dessert. I had the black and white forest cake from Mr. Baker (the best cakehouse around but I miss Red Ribbon and Goldilocks!) instead of the intended ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. I didn’t know it’s generally closed during Fridays, which is prayer day in the Gulf (opens at 2pm which is way late for my celebration).  Incidentally, a couple of guests brought three flavors of London Dairy.

In between the chit chats were funny antics as we watched telenovela (not on purpose, but was airing then) and TV Patrol via TFC. It felt real good to being gathered with Filipinos especially when we were real time watching the news back home: politics, showbiz, etc.

Many thanks for the greetings back home and elsewhere. It’s heartwarming to be remembered especially that I’m away, nostalgic, ey? To those who celebrated with me, many thanks. And of course, thank you for the presents. Lovely flowers (love the colors), sweets (yay), a mind-boggling book (I’m excited to read, I’m reminded of my book queue), and perfumes (I’m thinking that they thought I fancy perfumes, I got three. Interesting scents!). But more than these, I thank you all for the gift of time. :)

happy

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rains new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
Gods recreation of the new day

Cantina Laredo

The first time I tried authentic mexican food was in Coco Amigos in Dumaguete City, the only mexican restaurant along the Boulevard (its version of Baywalk in Roxas Boulevard) in the pier. After four years, I re-explored it in Cantina Laredo which offers gourmet mexican food. (Followed by my pre-birthday celebration in 2009.)

The moment you set foot in the resto you will feel the groove of continuous playing of mexican music which I found entertaining. Minus the waiters and waitresses whom I wished were aptly dressed as natives. You can leave that to your imagination, anyway. The place was comfy and candid yet vibrant enough and you will see but attentive staff of different nationalities.

australian avocado

These australian avocados found on each table aren’t regular free appetizers or desserts. But they are strategically there to do some marketing to try their avocado dishes. I would probably chance on it next time. I’m curious how it’s going to enrich and accessorize the gourmet picks.

nachos

These free nachos are automatically served after moving out the avocados. You’ll absolutely love the salsa. I almost generously stuffed myself, until our food came.

Camaron poblado asada. One of the bestsellers.

PICT0025

I think it takes much patience to prepare this camaron. A carne asada steak is wrapped around a grilled poblano pepper filled with sauteed shrimps, mushrooms, onions and monterey jack cheese. The serving is filling enough but you’ll amaze yourself that you’re already finishing it. This asada steak is specially tempting as you cut in and the shrimps, mushrooms and cheese are coming out. What makes it yummier? It’s served on a bed of chimichurri mixed herb sauce (check that green sauce).

chicken and fries

Mexican chicken and fries, will they make a difference?

It pays to check the difference amongst fried chicken and fries in different places, comparing it versus Filipino’s. The mexican fries and chicken tasted like the ones in Chili’s. It’s the ketchup that made the difference.

mexican sunset

Mexican sunset

As I was checking the menu, I wanted to try margarita to match Camaron poblado asada. But I might not be able to manage. Never tried a margarita yet! :) I instead opt for the mexican sunset. It’s a fruity combo of pomegranate and orange juice. A delicious blend. This is so much better than Bottlegreen’s pomegranate and elderflower juice.

sizzling brownie

I’ve tried a sizzling dessert for the first time. There’s mexican brownie and apple pie to choose from. We tried the brownie. As you can see from the photo, the staff prepared infront of us the choco brownie with pecans on a sizzling skillet. A mexican butter and vanilla ice cream (you can have cinnamon ice cream also) were put on top.

The skillet was still hot when put on the table, and as the ice cream slowly melted and blended with the brownie and mexican butter, the melted portion tasted like caramel. It’s fun to watch and try, but it’s too sweet even for a sweet toothie that I am.

This dining experience is worth a second visit. The steep price serves the quality and cozy place.

In 176th issue of Warrior of Light, enumerated are numerous (a number made me laugh!) points why women love men:

(a) Because they still manage to see our beauty, even when we ourselves no longer believe it.
(b) Because they are like pomegranates: most of them is impossible to digest, but the seeds are delicious
(c) Because they are always attracted by extremes: the opulent or the ascetic, warriors or monks, artists or generals.

(d) Because they always eat everything on their plate, and don’t feel guilty about it.

(e) Because a man’s biggest fear is not being a man (it never crosses a woman’s mind not to be a woman)

and I uberly liked this one…

Because they understand equations, politics, maths and economics, but not the feminine heart.

Read the complete points here.
