drinks

Bottlegreen drinks

Last week I’ve piqued on two flavors from Bottlegreen. While Cox’s Apple tasted like Cali’s Apple drink, the combination of elderflower and pomegranate as a drink came a little weird for me. Maybe it’s because I’m not oriented to floral flavors. Few days ago I got another two bottles of Cox’s Apple, while I almost never wanted to finish my pink drink. Until I read the article titled 11 Best Foods that You Are Not Eating Well.

Of these 11 best foods, only the folllowing are in my general consumption:
(a) Cabbage. Should be eaten like Asian-style slaw or as a crunchy topping on burgers and sandwiches.
(b) Dried plums. I’ve eaten one ages ago, ack!
(c) Pumpkin seeds, the most nutritious part of the pumpkin and packed with magnesium (yay!)
(d) Sardines, should be packed in olive or sardine oil.

Well, that’s 4 of 11. The rest include beets, swiss chard, cinnamon, pomegranate juice, turmeric, frozen blueberries and canned pumpkin (weird!). So, there’s no more reason for me to drop the bottle of pomegranate. That makes it 5 of 11.

In a recent survey sponsored by National Science Foundation, led by Ronald Inglehart, a political scientist at the University of Michigan, Denmark came out as the happiest country in the world.

Forty-two to 57 countries were surveyed, and there’s no information if Philippines was amongst those. While 350,000 respondents participated in the survey, and we can’t tell if there’s any Filipino immigrant amongst them. There is a strong correlation between happiness and democracy, social inequality and peacefulness. Puerto Rico and Colombia also rank highly, along with Northern Ireland, Iceland, Switzerland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Canada and Sweden.

According to Inglehart, ultimately, the most important determinant of happiness is the extent to which people have free choice in how to live their lives.

Anyhow, the most important realization here is: the richest country will not necessarily be the happiest. Parallel to life’s reality that money can’t buy happiness.

The survey which is being conducted since 1981 kept two simple questions to arrive with this conclusion, which are (a) Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy? (b) All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?

Hmmm, I’m thinking about my could have been answers if I were one of the respondents. What’s yours?

Training premise:
12noon to 130pm free lunch at Flavours Restaurant, Sheraton Hotel
2pm to 6pm, training in the same hotel

How cool is that? The first phase of the training came with a free overflowing buffet in a spacious setting that eases the tiredness and fulfills the hungry palate. The entire front of Flavours Restaurant is structured with a full ceiling to floor windows overlooking the pool, resort gardens and marine view as far as you can see.

starter salad

Salad ala-witsandnuts.

I started with a salad composed of randomly picked foreign stuff, with a vinaigrette sauce of course. My experiment was quite a self-hit, except that I didn’t eat the dried tomato (the one next to the corn).

Clockwise: I enjoyed my picks for the main course: Shrimp curry, kebab, indian rice, and rosemary grilled chicken; japanese food; choco and blueberry mousse, rice pudding (tasted like ginataan); cakes and a tidbit of fresh sweet melon

The buffet were spread over a large area and there are food served ranging from oriental to persian, and other choices, which will cater anyone’s taste. Since I am a sweet toothie, I thoroughly enjoyed tasting almost all of the available desserts. Needless to say, I definitely enjoyed this buffet because it was like an avenue for my food experimentation. Well, how I wish most trainings would be like this, where pigging out comes in the first phase. Though a sleepy afternoon was sort of problem. You guessed so, I am still full during short break’s cocktail (oh, I forgot to take photos!). I loved the cookies.

barrio fiesta collage

Kamayan Barrio Fiesta, Abu Dhabi

When Barrio Fiesta (BF) opened in Abu Dhabi last March, I thought it’s going to kill the other nearby Filipino restaurants. Of course, how can you beat the ‘name’ especially that it is known for its authentic Filipino cuisine. I suppressed my excitement to go there expecting that it would be jampacked. To my dismay, a number of people that I personally know who dined there never had anything good to say about their experience.

Until I craved for kare-kare and well, BF along with Max’s and Triple V is known for this, I finally gave it a try. First hand observations:

(a) It never felt like I was in BF.
(b) A good number of tables are there. But, these seemed like pretty empty tables and chairs.
(c) I was there on a weekend and surprisingly, there were only a couple of tables occupied.
(d) The Philippine flag hangs from the ceiling.
(e) Television is on the middle end. As I was eating, Wowowee is being aired.
(f) I thought I had to sit and call for the waiter. No, it has to be self-service, no pretty menus on the table. I almost suspect it’s not BF. Okay, maybe they are cutting variable expenses.
(g) There’s a queue stand (there’s no queue though) like in a fastfood/carinderia. No problem with that. But, really it felt like not BF (weeheehee, how many times did I/going to say that?). Checking on the dishes displayed, not tempting. Anyway, we ordered kare-kare (my verdict later), fried chicken (nothing special, home cooked chix are much better), chicken barbecue (nothing special; restos here are not allowed to sell pork barbecue, for some obvious reasons) along with plain rice and sodas.
(h) Food in general is not reasonably priced.

karekare

My yummy looking yet tastefully awful kare-kare.

I am naturally finishing my food even if it doesn’t taste good. But this one, I didn’t get to eat even 1/3. Not worth for take out, no one’s going to like it anyway. The authentic kare-kare from BF is here.

So, a little warning on the restaurant’s name. I think its diners are mostly first-timers, and you can tell the probability if they would revisit or not. But of course, BF in the Philippines is one of the finest restaurants. There’s no caveat to that.   But if we talk of BF Abu Dhabi, well, I might give it a second try after a cycle of being operational. I sure hope huge improvements are made then.
