An apology from the writer-plagiarist

IMG_1792
Looks like this one was not a case of ‘copying’. I hope she learned her lesson.

For those who have been following my post on plagiarism in Philippine Star, I got a copy of Mayenne Carmona’s apology that appeared in her column last weekend. Big thanks to Bette, one of the readers of this blog, for sending these to my email this afternoon.

The apology in that little corner

Here’s the apology verbatim:

I would like to apologize to my readers for my article last week, “Whom Not to Marry”. The wisdom of Fr. Pat Connor was not from a personal interview I had with him. In as much as I put his teachings in quotations, it was an oversight on my part not to have written that the source of his quotations and other parts of my article were from the column of Maureen Dowd, July 6, in The New York Times. — Mayenne Carmona

plagiarism is a big issue in the philippines. i used to review some master’s thesis at one of the top universities and got into a clash with someone who would not admit he had copied text, even if i could pinpoint exactly where it had come from. in addition to that, when i refused to sign the approval of his thesis, the university urged to me, saying that “it won’t be published anyway” i was shocked! my prof in tokyo would hang me upside down before he would allow that to happen. i let go of that position because i wouldn’t compromise.

That’s admirable of you. Copying would always be cheating, no matter what the intention is.

Heehee, no one’s going to believe her alibi.

  9. [...] Like a pupil’s work on synonyms.  Let’s see what the editor will do.  Another “so-called apology” like what Mayenne Carmona did?  Don’t sing the same old tunes.  [...]

This is not the first time she plagiarized a writeup. She wrote this article Win your Battle of the Bulge (May 29, 2010), and she literally copied and paste 90% of her writeup from wikipedia and another link you can find in Google. She manages to eke out a living out of people’s “intellectual property”, what a shame!

There was no apology at the online version. They just lifted out the article. The apology was stated in a way that she was still in denial to accept that she actually copied the article. Well, she can fool only herself.

I’m a no name to scare her. But I think she is now scared with all her regular readers (and non-readers), scared about the impression that she lost credibility.

Glad that she apologized to her viewers “kahit na papano”.

She had no choice but to humble herself. She’s caught.
