To bungee jump or not

Continued from visit to:
Ruins of Saint Paul, A-ma Temple and Kun Iam Statue
Museu De Macau
Macau Fisherman’s Wharf

leaning tower

Our visit to Macau Sky Tower is the last and the highlight of our one-day Macau tour. It’s a convention cum amusement center. I have not done my research before going there. Hence, I had zero expectations and was totally impressed as I did set foot. An Italian exhibit culminated few days before our tour. We are lucky that this leaning tower of Pisa side by side Macau Tower was still on display. Perhaps they kept these for the Christmas season as an added attraction.

Aside from the fancy dining and shopping it offers, the lobby also boasts seemingly classic Chinese paintings and giant jars. In one area at the ground floor, we sighted a Filipino band belting Knocks Me Off My Feet.

We were directed to visit 58th and 61st floors wherein the viewing deck and registration for sky jump and other adventure, respectively, can be found. To my delight, this is the same tower featured in Amazing Race: All Stars episode, Amazing Race Asia 3 and Jack Osbourne: Adrenaline Junkie.

We were asked by our guide who amongst us would dare to bungee jump (also spelled as bungy jump, from the word ‘bungy’ = a Kiwi slang for elastic strap, while ‘bungee’ originated from West Country dialect to mean anything thick and squat). Just the thought of it already gave me huge panic. On 61st floor, the so-called father of bungee jumping, AJ Hackett, is overseeing the adventurous offers for the tower’s guests.

If you’re wondering if I sky jumped or not, of course not. But I’m not losing hope that sooner or later I’ll be able to conquer my fear of heights. Haha. Big dream. Sa nakakatakot na rides at cable car ride nga eh kinakabahan na ako, sky jump pa.

The moment I knew the recorded facts that this is the 10th tallest tower in the world, 338 meters high (8th tallest in Asia) and it has the highest bungee jump facility that broke the record of jump from Eiffel Tower more than a decade ago, the more I got panicky and envious of those jump-queued. Hay, sana ako rin.

At one point your sky jump will be automatically cut off for you to be taken photo and in split second it will resume out of thin air. Exciting eh?

Click the link to read the Sky Jump details for March 2009. This is what you’re up to (and down) as you dare to do the highest sky jump:

If you’re not brave enough, you can instead try the Sky Walk. With this, you will be walking around the outer rim. There’s an overheard rail system to keep you safe. I boastfully thought, siguro naman kakayanin ko na’to. Pero hindi pa rin eh.

The third option is to mast climb. That is to climb at least 100 meters up to the mast ladder which normally takes two hours. Wow, mukhang kaya ko na yun. The problem is ayokong mapagod. Haha. Seriously, we didn’t have much time because we had to catch the turbo jet ride back to Hong Kong.

Registering for the sky jump, sky walk and mast climb will not necessarily earn you a certificate. You have to honestly finish the challenge as administered by the professionals from AJ Hackett.

In one area of the viewing deck, I didn’t know that the flooring was made of glass that when I did look down I was scared to death. Try looking through, scary!

wish ko makalapit ako

On the 58th floor, we got to enjoy the different views in Macau. If Victoria Peak is the nicest spot to appreciate the panoramic view of Hong Kong, from Macau Tower you’ll absolutely be wowed by these:

As I moved around, this charming statement caught me.

That made me buy this statement tee.

Macau is beautiful. There’s much to see and do. It’s definitely worth a second visit. When I revisit I hope I’m brave enough to fly. For now, I’m just not yet ready to pay for the jump just to have a heart attack. :)

I’ve never been interested in bungee jumping. Don’t like the idea of eyeballs getting dislodged ;) If I plan to overcome my fear of heights, I think skydiving is the way to go. Something Mr H and I plan to do after the wedding. Him eagerly, me warily ;)

Thanks for sharing these great photos. The view from the tower is breathtaking. It must be a thrill of a lifetime to go bungee jumping. Just reading about the sky jump, sky walk and mast climb already make my knees weak. I have a terrible fear of heights. I don’t think I can even muster enough guts to go near the view deck. Ha ha!

I also have fear of heights, pati na fear of flying. Sobra akong ninenerbyos lalo na sa take off and landing. Buti na lang it’s not enough to stop me from flying. I just sweat a lot.
When we went to Tokyo tower there was a glass floor na when you’re standing on it it feels like you’re floating in mid-air. Did the Macau tower have something similar?

Anyone who’s bungee-jumped for the first time always says it’s worth it. Ako, hihimatayin. I sometimes watch them do it and feel like hihika-in ako! I hope to someday get the chance to do it, curls and all. :)

  20. witsandnuts says: March 18, 20099:16 am

The aerial view is great. Did you try parasailing? Wow!

  21. witsandnuts says: March 18, 20099:16 am

The zipline looks more manageable. But this sky jump (the highest in the world) is really scary!

  22. witsandnuts says: March 18, 20099:18 am

Wow, skydiving! I’m excited for you. And it must be less scary to try it with your better half.

  23. witsandnuts says: March 18, 20099:18 am

OMG! You really love to ‘fly’. I wish to see your picture while doing the sky jump.

  24. witsandnuts says: March 18, 20099:19 am

Same here. =) I was really scared to death, as in maluluha nako nung nasa viewing deck ako tapos napatingin ako dun sa glass floor. Feeling ko nahulog ako from 58th floor to ground.

  25. upto6only says: March 18, 200910:25 am

hehehe i did not try it any more coz i’m already super dizzy to stand :(

  26. witsandnuts says: March 18, 200911:33 am

Thanks for appreciating the pix. Dinadaan ko na lang sa pic-taking yung frustration ko na mag sky jump. Heehee.

  27. witsandnuts says: March 18, 200911:34 am

When I revisit, I’ll do the sky jump. Nag iipon pa ko ng lakas ng loob. Gusto ko yung hindi ako pipikit. Hahaha.

  28. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:26 pm

I think you’d be able to sky jump, especially with your honey. =)

  29. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:28 pm

Macau Tower also has the glass floor but not as scary to make you feel you’re floating it mid-air. Pero nakakaiyak pa rin (sa takot) nung napatingin ako sa floor.

  30. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:29 pm

    Thanks, Jeanny.

Haha. I had the same thought. Kung kaya nila dapat kaya ko din. Pero not now. ;)

  31. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:34 pm

OMG! I googled it. That was scaryyyyyyyyy! A once in a lifetime experience.

  32. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:35 pm

I hope we’ll be able to ‘fly’ one day. It must be an awesome experience.

  33. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:36 pm

Heehee. I remember one group, they were trying to convince their friend to sky jump. Kahit daw ilibre sya or bayaran hinding hindi nya ita-try.

  34. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:37 pm

Welcome back to the site! Malapit na nga pala bakasyon. Sana next time magcoincide bakasyon natin.

  35. witsandnuts says: March 19, 200912:40 pm

To skydive looks more manageable and interesting for me. But even so, I hope I’m courageous enough when the opportunity to try it comes. Yeah, the motto rocks. “Only skydivers know, why birds sing”.
