Photo Hunt: Pink

As you probably know, I’ve been taking photos of the flowers that grow in the Gulf. This pink gumamela (hibiscus) reminded me of two things:
(a) The study of pistil, stamen, etc. during Science class when I was still a pupil.
(b) The bubble making we did when I was a kid. In the Philippines, the kids would crush the flowers and leaves until the sticky juices come out. While papaya stalks are being dipped there and are used as straws for blowing bubbles. Gumamela’s use varies. It is used as hair care in India, the petals are used in making tea in Egypt and Sudan, and generally treated as a medicinal plant in many countries.
The second photo was taken in Burjuman Mall in Dubai last year. The stairs were decorated like that in celebration of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

oh i love hibiscus! when i was in 6th grade, my bestfriend was a green thumb who has a vast collection of the hibiscus variety. i liked it so much that i planted several in my parents’ yard as well. they’re still there until now, lots of pinks and reds and petal styles. every time i’m home and i see them, it takes me back to my carefree gradeschool days. ^-^
like the decoration of the mall, a great idea.

oh i remember studying the parts of the flower very well…complete with drawings! as kids, we also mixed gumamela’s juice from the petals and flowers with laundry bar in the water to blow bubbles. haha, fun times.

when i visited dubai, i’d hang out at that area and just look up and appreciate the stairs and the ceiling. how i miss dubai.
the bubble making made me smile. bubbles from mashed gumamela is ingenius…at 8, i thought i invented it!:D

They did that for breast cancer awareness month? That’s great! I wish there were more initiatives like that. Looks cool..

That flower looks odd, like a rumpled pink paper.
nung kabataan ko we used to extract the juice from it and use it for pretend play – cooking oil (for luto-lutoan), lotion, shampoo and of course ang walang kamatayan nga na bubble making!
