I (honestly) thought it was a copycat

Philippine flag in the USB

(The Philippine flag on the flash disk. Cool, isn’t it? This pretty disk houses at least 9,000 songs. This is supplied in the two-microphone enabled videoke system.)

I have been scouting for a (sort of) magic sing in the UAE for internal consumption. I was discouraged when I learned that the song menu contains at least 20% Hindi (Indian) songs, 80% Tagalog and English songs. Hence, when I went home for a short break, I was intent to buy one which is sourced there. Strange though that the WOW Magic Sing salesman in one of the malls in Metro Manila advised me to get a Pensonic videoke instead. Salestalk tidbits: “it offers more and newer compilation of songs + it is not expensive”.

The truth is I was really hesitant to get a Pensonic product, thinking that this might cause me trouble at the immigration. I thought that it was a copycat of Panasonic. The first time I saw a Pensonic product (i.e. electric fan) was in 2003 in Tutuban Mall. But I began to buy the thought knowing that the brand, with a range of products, is now prominently displayed in one of the popular appliance centers in Metro Manila. Just to pacify my copycat worries, I did a little googling and found out that Pensonic was actually a coined word, PEN = Penang (since it originated in Penang, Malaysia) and SONIC = sounds. The trademark was rightfully registered in 1984. (The company has been existing since 1965, but only came up with serious branding when they began increasing the segmentation.)

So, I saved 80% of my budget from this purchase. The double-mic system is tiny and mobile, by the way. We are thoroughly enjoying it and I wish to get familiarized and reoriented with the 9,000 songs by the end of third quarter. Hahaha. It is a little funny whenever I get to discover songs that I never knew they exist and knowing that I know a lot of songs (that I just do not know the titles). And while I was at my addicted phase, I have been singing everynight during the first week. Now I emphatized with (and admire) the sense of discipline of the singers. Ang hirap pala maging singer. ;)

This is not a paid post. I just thought it deserves a post to clarify an entity’s rightful claim. I have one issue though. Until now, I do not know how to adjust the scoring level. Even when (we assume) we are already belting at our best, our highest score so far, is 71. Booo. While in our magic sing at home, even if I am sintunado (out of tune), I still confidently get a 90. ;)

lakasan mo lang pagkanta mo at magiging 100% ka din diyan! anu mga background videos? sana hindi yung mga naka 2 piece na babae na nagtatatakbo sa beach haha. ganun kasi ibang videokes eh hahaha :P

Not working yung “malakas na boses” style eh. Strict sya talaga pagdating sa pagscore. Hahaha.

Maganda naman yung background. Normally mga landscape/views.

hmmm.. affected ata nung leveling e. Alisin mo sa “professional”. :) ) May ganong option sa magicsing e. And yes, addict din ako sa pagvideoke. :D

Yes, cheap lang. P3k lang yung double-mic. Cheaper pag single mic.

Hey, thanks for writing about this. I now have a cheaper but not necessarily sub-par alternative to a magic sing. Yippee! :)

wow may ganyan palang product. do you load your own music or does it come with its own catalog?

    • witsandnuts says: April 28, 20106:23 am

The 9,000 songs were pre-loaded. The disk can be updated upon presentation to Pensonic branch in the Philippines. The package contains a song menu/catalogue, too.

From the appliance center in SM Megamall. Less than P3.5k. I think it’s less 3k if single mic.

9,000 songs? Awesome ! Hope you did not break your piggy bank buying it :)

    • witsandnuts says: May 10, 20103:57 am

Haha, it was (very) reasonably priced. A little over P3k.

Hey, thanks for this informative review. i just have a question though.. Thanks again. Cheers.

Yeah, you can take off the melody. The quality of the sounds and library of songs are impressive, too.
