A little junk food for the brain
![]()
(We were flipping the pages of this free teaser magazine while waiting for the 4:30 PM screening of The Karate Kid last Saturday.)
I think that it is odd that I got surprised when I learned that the third installment of the Twilight Saga, Eclipse, is going to be shown in the cinemas soon. I mean, I used to be very informed of anything Twilight related. While it is debuting on the 30th of June in most of the countries, we got the 8th of July playdate here. It is odder that I did not take it as a big deal like when I did when the first installment was shown here few days late. Really, the delay strained my patience and even pained my sleep. I even made pre-screening preparations like re-reading the book, having the ticket in advance, at a minimum. It is interesting though that there is going to be an advanced screening (which is rarely happening in the UAE) of Eclipse on 1st of July. The oddest thing was that I did not even consider that. Wow, I think I have matured a lot (*facepalm*).
If you are a follower of this blog, you can attest that I was soooo consumed by Twilight. I can not help but giggle when I re-read my crazy entries on the day I got the four books (and reading it several times), that I was so engrossed that I associated too many things with Twilight that it affected my conversations with selected few, going gaga over my Twilight shoes (I love this pair until now; I think this is going to be one of my treasured pairs forever), writing my review for the first film adaptation after watching it thrice in the cinema, and more. Well, I thought those were the most logical stuff to write that moment. Seriously.
I am randomly recollecting how this Twilight madness enriched my well-being. Aside from the unexpected financial benefit which I got during one of my travels (i.e. I did not pay for my excess baggage, more than 10 kilos as I remember, when I was in Hong Kong, because I was wearing my Twilight shoes which signaled the airport officer that we are on the same boat. The rest is history. Hence, I got an implicit discount.), I think what matters more to me is the friendship it strengthened and the one of a kind virtual association I gained by sharing the same passion for Jacob and/or Edward (just kidding), errr, by sharing the same interest – to put it simply (special mention to Toni, who has been there through thick and thin; yes, there’s such a thing!). You probably know how it feels when you are fighting for a common cause.
Going back to my claimed “maturity”, I saw it coming when I was never tempted to get a graphic novel at all and New Moon DVD (but I watched it twice on the big screen, haha) soon. I was not tracking Stephenie Meyer‘s new novel as well. Unlike when I finished the four books, I was very hungry for anything Meyer that I also read The Host (yes, she knows other creatures other than vampires and wolves!), which made me realize just now that I have not done a review yet.
It is interesting how junk food for the brain (the same with Farm Town, chic literatures, etc.) consumes us in a way as if it meant the world to us. That during those times, we tried hard to manage the addiction without really knowing when the fever is going to subside. When I re-read my Twilight entries and Farm Town madness, I never felt though that I wanted to delete any of these even if it is going to be embarrassing to some extent… because they formed part of my interests and made me. We must be thankful for this kind of junk food because they kept us sane. We can never be too serious, there is going to be the other side of us always. But as the term suggests, we need to precaution ourselves not to take too much junk for our brains.
What are your junk food for the brain?

Junk food indeed! My favorites are sci-fi, fantasy and the occasional chick lit.
They’re such fun reads for me.
But you’re still going to watch Eclipse, aren’t you?
Yes, I will. I can not miss it. But maybe, not on the first day.
yeah! lapit na ang showing ng eclipse dito and i’m so excited na. actually, inaantay ko munang mapanood itong eclipse before ko simulan basahin ang breaking dawn. hehehe
Naku, ako dati non-stop ang pagbabasa ko. As in addict!
alam mo ba, every time i hear or read a reference to that series, i think of you? i remember how you are so “gaga” about it nga.
Haha, I remember those days when people would email me and/or send me messages to tell me that something reminded of me… because of Twilight.
sad to say that i havent read any of the books yet and has not watched the series. but it sounds like a lot of people likes it. this post proves it again.
Do not worry, Dom. I think there are few men who take time for this saga. Its target is majorly the teeners (girls). And I am not of them but I was once “biten” by the vampire virus.
hopefully i can watch eclipse on wednesday. sana maymahatak ako
Naku, marami dyang pwede heehee. Kung andyan ako, e di tayong dalawa. Haha.
i cant wait to watch it on wednesday, buti na lang holiday dito sa pinas.
natatawa rin ako sa mga ginawa ko dati. mga kaadikan natin. lol. buti na yan keysa magdrugs ka. ako lahat i tried kasi curious ako at naadik ako pero isa lang ang hindi ko natikman yung drugs nga. takot ako maadik kasi hindi ko macontrol yung craving ko most of the time.
Of course, no to drugs (and beer and smoking)!
I envy people who can manage some time for “junk food for the brain” =)
Although it’s more of my unwillingness to get addicted after those Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew days back in Elementary and high school, hehe. Funny thing is my husband engages in “brain junk food” talk with friends and I just have to stay at the sidelines…
I enjoy having brain junk food talk, too.
are you in remission na? he he!
i’ve read the twilight series, but im not that into the movies.
Partial remission haha! You mean, you haven’t seen Twilight or New Moon the movie? New Moon is worth watching, much better than the book. Eclipse is my most fave among the 4 books. I hope the adaptation will do justice.
I think a moderate “junk food for the brain” is never harmless. Makes things interesting =)
I agree. Anything not taken into moderation is harmful.
hahaha! naalala ko rin nung addict din ako sa twilight at lalo na sa Farmtown to the point na i list down what i buy, how many hours before i harvest them and how much i will earn. silly things i did before even if i was at work. from this i have moved on nah.
but while away from hubby and baby, i got addicted with reading chic lit books, again! since march this year, i have read more than 15 chic lits! i was so magastos but it’s good coz it prevented me from getting insane. LOL. now i’m addicted with my baby, and i have stopped reading again.
15 chic lits! Wow, that’s remarkable!
Haha, I think we almost had the same level of craziness for Farm Town. But I have stopped “farming” a long time ago already.
Haha thanks for the shoutout.
I WANT TO WATCH ECLIPSE.
I haven’t been following the previews or build-up/hype for the film, been so busy with the baby and work. BUT I WANNA SEE IT ON THE BIG SCREEN.
TEAM JACOB W000000000000T!
Hello there, Twilight sister!
I am excited to see how our favorite “tent scene” will be depicted in the movie!
I remember your Twilight shoes. I think they were so cool.
Eclipse is my favorite among the 4 books.
It’s already showing here but I might have to wait a few days before going to the movie theater because of hubby’s busy schedule. It won’t be fun watching it without him.
Eclipse is also my most fave among the four books. I wonder if you and your hubby have watched it already. Are you Team Jacob or Edward in the third installment? My preference varies per book. Heehee.
i think you need not be embarassed, that’s what made you happy at that time and like what you said it made you (part of you) (not to mention the twilight shoes, it is exceptional **wink**, i like it)
im not really a fan of eclipse, i didnt read the books but I watched the first 2movies and im thinking of watching eclipse.. hehe just for the sake na nde mahuli sa kwentuhan sa during office break… and i wanna know kung nag improve na ung acting ni edward and bella and im gonna watch it with someone special.
I’ve heard that Eclipse was much better than the first two movies. I’m yet to watch this weekend. Yes, the Twilight shoes are really something.
Uy, happy watching with your special someone.
