Worth watching more than once

When Harry Met Sally, Once, Titanic

A flu attacked me the night before the weekend which made me bedridden the following day. Avoiding anything which is very physical and with a pale appetite, I at least wanted to feed my eyes. As a result, I marathoned three movies. These are amongst those, I am convinced, I can watch over and again:

When Harry Met Sally (1989) – I was totally glued with the conversations between Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan). Although I find Harry “sort of ugly” for Sally, his being able to talk like a non-stop machine with sense is hilarious and endearing. Despite that the boundaries of friendship are obviously defined in many cases, it is interesting how the story can make you pretend that the predictable is unpredictable. One of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. As it was nearing the finale, I was wishing it would never end. It is also good to see Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia in Star Wars Trilogy) here.

Once (2006) – The movie was set in Dublin, Ireland and featured its local musicians. The main guy (Glen Hansard) writes and sings so well. I liked the realistic appeal of the story, when you can do everything and nothing (alike at the same time), and the ending was depicted in its full practicality. The songs featured are remarkable and I think that Falling Slowly and Fallen from the Sky are the best among the plenty of good songs from the soundtrack. Although produced under a low budget, this movie has a distinct character that you will not forget – one of which is finding the balance between romantic and musical connections.

Titanic (1997) – While there was a number of movies produced based on the sinking of RMS Titanic, this stands as the most popular to date. I was still in college when I first watched it and I honestly did not appreciate it that time. I thought it was too mushy and it clouded its other brilliant aspects. Until I saw it for the second time during the weekend, I realized that it was well-made and story was daunting and classic. It took me more than a decade to see it from a different angle (*facepalm*). And guess what? James Cameron (also the director of Avatar) used the “I See You” line in this movie, for the first time. That explains why it sounded familiar during the Avatar screening.

i can watch titanic for many times i want and not get bored by it, i can even cry every time i watch that.

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:29 am

There are also movies that can still pull out my emotions as if that’s the first time I’m watching it (e.g. Facing the Giants, Before Sunset).

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:32 am

Meg Ryan’s beauty and acting are timeless.

  5. redlan says: July 4, 201011:57 am

Basta Meg Ryan, I love the movie then. I still can imagine the Rose and Jack romantic scenes. mga “only wearing this” lines. lol. Pinabalik mo yung titanic fever ko. lol

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:33 am

I think that the “wearing only this…” line has become more popular than the “I see you…” as used in Titanic.

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:34 am

I’ll make a wild guess. You watched it in Isetann? That time, that mall still smells fresh ‘no? Heehee.

havent watched the first two movies in your list. sounds good too but i watched titanic only once. im not really into love story movies but with friends i do.

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:36 am

If you’re into humorous films, you probably will like When Harry Met Sally. If into music (and even if not), Once would be perfect.

  8. docgelo says: July 4, 20109:22 pm

i’ve watched titanic too a countless times.
iyong harry met sally and once, hindi pa. *did i miss the world?” =)

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:36 am

Yes, you’re missing a lot, Doc! Haha. Take time to see it. :)

  9. CandyQ says: July 4, 201011:06 pm

I heartily agree with When Harry Met Sally and Once – I could watch those two films over and over again without getting tired of them. :) On the other hand, watching Titanic twice was quite enough to last me a few lifetimes.

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:37 am

Titanic is sort of heavy for me. But I can watch When Harry Met Sally on a weekly basis. Lol.

  10. ibyang says: July 5, 20104:30 am

i hope you get better soon.

i like those movies, especially “Once”…here in Sydney, I can’t find a “Once” DVD on sale so I just downloaded it.

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:39 am

Thanks, Ibyang. Too stressed that fever hit me. I read your recent entry about your fave songs from the movies. Once has a very nice soundtrack.

hay naku, i remember watching titanic more four times in cinemas…the only time i’ve ever watched a movie more than once in a cinema!

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:41 am

4 times! Natalo mo ako, hahaha. Thrice lang ako nung sa Twilight. But of course, they’re not comparable at all. Titanic is a certified classic.

  12. Golden says: July 5, 20108:40 am

Haven’t watched those movies yet aside from Titanic. Gotta watch those other 2 films you mentioned above. I think they’re my type.

    Lots of love,

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:42 am

The first two movies on the list are worth the try. ;)

  13. Yellow Bells says: July 5, 20109:34 am

i love titanic, i remember watching it with my niece whose same age as me, we were in high school back then and I can remember how full the cinema house was. It was a real classic, worth watching over and over again

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:43 am

It’s so weird of me that I only got to appreciate it recently. Better late than never. ;)

  14. burksy says: July 6, 20107:28 am

when harry met sally lang di ko pa napapanood… ok yung trivia mo about “i see you”… gusto ko tuloy i-review yung movie. best scenes, for me, includes the quartet/trio who kept on playing and the old couple in bed. :’( ahaaaay!

tapos yung Once, iniregalo ko pa yung kopya ko kay… *blush* double sigh…

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:47 am

I am SURE you will like When Harry Met Sally. Will glue you. :)

I didn’t realize the “I See You” part until “aha, that sounds familiar!” Nakakaiyak nung pinapakita yung architect, captain, musicians, and the others who opted to embrace the luxurious ship until their last breaths.

Uy, may soft spot pala talaga sayo ang Once. ;)

  15. Photo Cache says: July 6, 20107:39 am

I must say I have not seen nor even heard of the second movie. Titanic is a movie that I only see when my mood is a bit somber.

Do you agree with Harry that men and women cannot be friends?

    • witsandnuts says: July 6, 20108:51 am

Once is an indie film, but got a number of awards/recognition. If you liked Before Sunset and Before Sunrise, you probably will like it, too.

Harry’s big claim that men and women cannot be friends kept cracking my head to form my own conclusion. I enjoyed their arguments (with Sally), and in the end I can say that I do not agree with him with that statement.

  16. June (An Asian Traveler) says: July 6, 20109:01 am

I still have dvds of When Harry Met Sally and Titanic. I love them both. I haven’t watch Once. I’ll try to have a copy of this.

    • witsandnuts says: July 7, 20107:32 am

      Once is a must-see. :)

  17. Kero says: July 6, 20109:48 pm

naku, nakau isa pa lang ang napanood ko sa tatlong yan hahaha. hopefully I can grab a copy soon. ngayon ko din lang narinig ang Once. will definitely add to my must-see list =)

    • witsandnuts says: July 7, 20107:33 am

I assumed that was Titanic? :) Among these three, When Harry Met Sally is my most fave.

Thanks for sharing your favorite movies. Nice choices. I also have several all-time favorites that I never get tired of watching. Some of them are Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and A Walk in the Clouds.
