Blog anniversary and birthday giveaway

burj khalifa notebooks
(One of my favorite Burj Khalifa souvenirs. These are journals with unique covers. Which color do you prefer?)

To my old and new readers, did you know that I am now on my third year of random babbling? It feels like just yesterday. It started with irregular rants and raves on food (though I am no expert, I seriously thought that was all I should talk about)… and then, a little of MANY things I wrote as well. Although there are advantages and disadvantages of not having a particular niche, writing about my varied interests is how I roll. And I wish to thank all of you who sustain the fuel of our camaraderie in the blogosphere.

Since this is also my most favorite month, the next words are going to tell you why, I am holding a blog anniversary and birthday giveaway. I have this in my head since that day I went up to the tallest tower in the earth when I saw these pretty things from the souvenir shop.

burj khalifa cd holder
(A postcard set containing 16 beautiful shots of the tallest tower and a CD holder with the same sweater/jacket design.)

This giveaway is for everyone and anyone and is going to be easy. Just leave a comment on this post to let me know (hey, not really fishing for compliments; but just to read your thoughts while on the same page):

(1) How we met virtually and/or in person (I think the second one’s rare)
(2) Why you read this blog
(3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)
(4) Topics that you want me to write about/proposed changes to this blog
(5) “A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person.

burj khalifa postcards
(The several views of the tallest tower on the postcards.)

We are going to have three (3) winners, whom I am sending a personal note to answer their respective queries on # 5:
(1) You! If you happen to be the third to leave a comment. [A jacket notebook's for you.]
(2) The one whose comment is going to be the most valuable based on my panel of judges decision. Haha. Winner # 1 excluded from the selection. [Jacket notebook + jacket CD holder + 1 set of postcards + a personal stuff from me are going to be yours.]
(3) The one selected based on manual raffle. Winners 1 & 2 excluded from the raffle population. [One of the jacket notebooks flying from UAE to you.]

burj khalifa postcards 2
(On the postcards: Always grand wherever you view it. Of course, I also like my own snapshot taken from a restaurant in Dusit Thani Hotel.)

Comments are not going to be published/visible until 17th of July. Yes, that is my birthday!

Ohhhh, this is really exciting. i wouldn’t know if I’m the third, haha. Well, anyway, here goes my answers:
    1) How we met virtually. It was Odette who encouraged me to blog when she texted me about her blogsite. It was then that I decided to read the comments section of her blog and led me to you. When I was in Caryn’s page, found that you were also her friend, that’s when I started reading your posts.
    2) this blog keeps me hooked because i love the tales of living in a different place as an expat. I may not be around in another country to experience different things but the stories you share in this blog are experiences I could count on when I finally have the chance going there.
    3)http://witsandnuts.com/2008/09/23/off-to-the-courier-tomorrow/#more-410
This link is very memorable to me because I was drooling for this stuffs for the creative swap and never expected it would end up in my hands. Thee notebook is very handy for me now because it contains addresses of the people I love including blogger friends, the socks, believe it or not is framed on the two doors of our house, the kids’ and ours’. Thank you so much witsandnuts.
    4) I am learning to get the hang of Dubai food. There’s a little place here in Gensan called Little Dubai. While you may be in Abu Dhabi, i believe the food there are somewhat similar to that of Dubai, so i would like to read more of Dubai foods and how it is eaten.
5)Personal question i’d like to ask when i meet you: May boyfriend ka ba? Seems like i have not read this in any of your posts.

    Congratulations witsandnuts and Happy Birthday!

  6. Daphne says: July 10, 20106:58 am

First of all happy 3rd blog anniversary and advanced happy birthday to you. I will be busy by then since my sister is in town so I wanted to greet you in advanced. =)

Now on to the answers to your giveaway questions:
    1. We met virtually when I did a google search on blogs featuring the UAE and decided to drop by your blog. Since then I haven’t stopped dropping by your very interesting blog.
    2. I like reading this blog because I like to keep updated with happenings in the UAE. A place I called home for 6 years. So far I hardly recognized the place, it has evolved alot since I lived there.
    3. http://witsandnuts.com/2010/06/03/climbing-the-worlds-tallest-tower/ is my favorite post among many. As I mentioned earlier, I like to read about new developments in the UAE and reading about the tallest tower from your perspective felt like I was there na rin. :D
    4. More restaurant reviews should be featured. There is a wide gamut of eateries there I’m sure you will never run out of posts.
    5. Hmmm the first thing I will ask you if we ever met for real would be: “where did you learn to write so well?” hehehe

  7. docgelo says: July 10, 201011:31 am

    1. How we met? I followed your link and found your blog late last year I guess, after I read your comment in one of our common blog buddies.
    2. You never tire of reinventing your blog. From its header, to blogging about varied entries and its entire look, i’ve somehow followed how it evolved. That makes it fascinating.
    3. I like your “8 Faces of Adobo” (http://witsandnuts.com/2010/05/18/the-8-faces-of-adobo/); I never craved that much for that common favorite until I read your post.
    4. I also like your post when it talks about anything about your place. Few of my closest relatives are there but too busy to share about UAE. So other than food entries, please continue sharing interesting stuffs about the Mid East.
    5. I’m not sure if you have blogged about this already, but I’ll probably ask you: how does it feel like to maintain a blog that’s being followed and read religiously? No seriously, I’ll ask your real name.

happy birthday to witsandnuts and to the blog owner behind it.
halos magkabirthday kayo ng mom ko. =)

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)
I just had to do a search for this post: http://witsandnuts.com/2008/09/18/wolf-with-me-friends/
Why? TWILIGHT KINDRED SOUL!!! It took over our lives for awhile, didn’t it? Haha!

    (1) How we met virtually and/or in person? I learned about your blog after searching “The Killers Live in Abu Dhabi”on Google. :)

    (2) Why you read this blog? Being someone who also resides in Abu Dhabi, I can relate to almost all of your rants and raves.

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why) http://witsandnuts.com/2009/12/09/the-killers-concert-in-abu-dhabi/ – The reason is quite obvious. I’m the biggest fan of The Killers in the UAE. :)

happy anniversary and may you have the best birthday ever! i am trailing behind you by a blog year, but all the same, it is lots of fun right?
1 and 2. i remember the first time i saw you was on dyanie’s blog, then i went to visit and kept coming back as usual, because of the exact reason you put in – i like the randomness, the variety of things you discuss from the historical to the fast food chains LOL
3.my favorite post is this http://witsandnuts.com/2010/07/03/what-leo-messi-can-do/comment-page-1/#comment-11764 because… i am absolutely crazy for Lionel Messi!

happy blog anniversary and happy birthday too (is it on the 17th?)! ^_^

anyway, if i remember things right, i knew about your weblog thru plurk. I click on the link you provided in your profile and then became your avid reader ( i was actively using my taste buds corner blog then).

I simply love reading your blog because as you’ve said, you wrote about different things. You write very well and is very eclectic.

As of today, my ever favorite blog post of yours is “the 8 faces of adobo”. love it, love it, love it talaga.

    HAPPY BLOG-ANIVERSARY, Ms. Jo!!!

  15. yummybite says: July 11, 20102:09 pm

hi jo! here is my entry:

    (1) How we met virtually and/or in person (I think the second one’s rare)
    - I remember we met through our old accounts in Multiply. My site was http://barelyyummy.multiply.com. Can’t remember though if I added you or you added me but we’re both regular “commenters” on Alluriyah’s blog.

    (2) Why you read this blog
    - I find it amusing, refreshing and very informative. There are a lot of things that I haven’t tried doing and exploring, and I am just impressed how you seem to do so many things even if you are busy with work. With your writings, it feels like I did them myself. The way you narrate and share your stories, it’s like we (readers) are part of your every story. I’m actually guilty of reading your blog almost every morning (or afternoon, whichever time I’m free) when I’m at work. Good thing the boss doesn’t care.

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)
    - I love all your posts but my most favorites (sorry but it’s not only one =( …) are the Creative Swaps (it started here: http://witsandnuts.com/2008/09/03/creative-swap/). Even if I’m not part of it, I always look forward to what will you be making for the month. I am not a crafty person but just a certified wanna-be. Haven’t got the time to do crafty things myself so I just read everyone’s post on Creative Swaps. I am having lots of ideas but I’m just ningas-kugon. Isipin kong gawin ngayon but after a few days I’ll forget all about it. LOL

    (4) Topics that you want me to write about/proposed changes to this blog
    - Hmmm..not much naman. Maybe I’m looking forward to your posts with pictures of you. But I think you are the shy type so ito rin yung parang “suntok sa buwan”? hehehe.

    (5) “A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person.
    - This is quite personal. Are you married or single? =)

Happy 3rd year Anniversary to your blog and Advance Happy Birthday!

P.S. This is my very first time to join a blog anniversary/bday give away! Suntok sa buwan ulit?
Hahaha! Now I’m thinking, that would be my “phrase for the day”. Will make a status on my FB. =) Cenxa na ha jo, parang wala namang kwenta mga pinagsasabi ko dito. =)

    1) We met virtually through Toni’s blog.
    (2) I find your posts interesting. I’ve never been to Dubai and I always appreciate the virtual tour whenever you share your great photos.
    (3) I always look forward to your year-ender posts. It’s nice to look back at the highlights of the year. I enjoyed your 2009 year-ender post last year: http://witsandnuts.com/2009/12/28/witsandnuts-2009-in-a-glance/
    (4) I like you to continue posting about the wonders of Dubai.
    (5) “Where do you want to eat?”- So that we can continue talking at the restaurant. (haha!)

  17. fortuitous faery says: July 11, 20109:45 pm

    1) my feeble memory fails me now…but i may have landed on your blog from clicking on other people’s blogs! then i decided to put you on my blog roll. :)
    2) i read this blog because it’s an amazing way to know about pinoy life under the dubai sun. the dubai architecture featured is always awesome!
    3) http://witsandnuts.com/2009/11/23/my-favorite-section-in-the-supermarket/ hits home for me, because i can relate to that experience of finding a piece of the philippines in the grocery aisle–whether it’s chocnut chocolates or a bottle of tamis-anghang banana ketchup.
    4) your variety of posts are already entertaining as is!
    5) this is also a “suntok sa buwan” question: would you like to be a miss iggy correspondent, our first in the middle east? :P

    HAPPY BLOGOVERSARY and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

and congrats din kasi 3 years na pala tong blog mo. more blogging years to come. *cheers*

hindi ako magaling sumagot at lalong hindi ako maswerte sa mga contest but i’ll try my luck here:
(1)How we met virtually and/or in person (I think the second one’s rare)
? As I remember, I got the chance to stumble on this blog via Toni of wifelystep. When I started blogging kasi yong blog nya ang lagi kong binibisita at lahat ng magkocomment sa blog nya eh binibisita ko din.

    (2)Why you read this blog
? I love to read your blog for three reasons: 1) because you’re a very nice person. Minsan kasi kapag feeling ko masungit or mataray yong personality ng blogger eh natatakot akong magcomment or bumalik sa blog to read his/her entries. 2) Because I learn a lot of things from your entries. And with the pictures you’ve shared eh feeling ko nakakapagtravel na din ako. 3) Because you’re entries inspires me and encourages me to continue to dream.

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)
?Here’s the link from one of my favorite posts from this site http://witsandnuts.com/2008/08/01/kwentong-kayumanggi-1-ayoko-munang-mag-ingles/
Because dito ko nalaman that you are a Filipino and that you’re from Laguna pala at kung hindi ako nagkakamali ay ito din ang entry mo na una kong nabasa but I was too shy to leave a comment then.

(4)Topics that you want me to write about/proposed changes to this blog
?Continue to write about your travels and your experiences.

(5)“A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person.
?If we ever get the chance to meet in person, the first thing that I want to say is to thank you for being so nice and so generous to me.

    1. Through blog-hopping!
    2. Because we share common interests – food, films, books and other lifestyle topics.
    3. No particular post but our favorites in your blog are those that feature food or places in UAE (because we’d like to go back and visit the place for more than a day!).
    4. Hmmm…we like the look of your blog already. Maybe…more giveaways? Hehehe.
    5. Vanilla or chocolate?

tapos nagcomment ako!.. at minsan magkamali nang tawagin kitang pards!..he he he.

Happy birthday! You are an awesome blogger and I hope you keep writing and sharing all your stories with us!

    (1) How we met virtually and/or in person (I think the second one’s rare)
    * I blog-hopped to yours from Toni’s! (wifelysteps.com)

    (2) Why you read this blog
    * I may not often comment, but I read your blog regularly because it’s a window to your life in what I consider a fascinating country and culture. Plus, you’re an Austenian, hence, your views and opinions on things can be trusted, haha! That’s 10+ points in my book! :)

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)
    * Your post on the “8 Faces Of Adobo,” is one of my favorites!
    http://witsandnuts.com/2010/05/18/the-8-faces-of-adobo/
Adobo is one of my favorite things to cook, and your post on the different types of it reminded me that there’s many ways to prepare this favorite dish. I had forgotten about crispy adobo, which my Lola used to make all the time, and revisiting those memories through your post was fun!

    (4) Topics that you want me to write about/proposed changes to this blog
I’d like to see more kitchen experiments with food local to the UAE. I think you can totally wing it!

    (5) “A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person.
In your opinion, who makes a better Mr. Darcy: Matthew Macfadyen (from the 2005 movie) or Colin Firth (from the BBC miniseries)? ;)

  23. maan says: July 13, 20108:27 am

    yay, am joining!

    1) hmm, this question is kinda tough coz i already forgot how, but i think i managed to stumble upon your blog either through sinta/toni while bloghopping. do u remember how din ba? haha!
    2) your photos are good (i wish i had a dslr) that for ex., your food photos always make my mouth water kasi mukha talagang masarap! it’s interesting to read your life as an OFW in the middle east, how culture is different and the like (and the nice places you get to go to, the shopping areas that made me wish pwede pabili, haha).

    advanced happy birthday! mwah.
    (3) http://witsandnuts.com/2009/12/07/the-milk-toof/#more-1595 = need i say more??? only a handful of u in the world have this book! aaaaaaahhhhh!
    (4) more book reviews :p hindi ako kasi mahilig kay austen, and i’m interested din in other genres u like, if ever.
(5)bakit di ka nagpapakita ng mukhaaaaaaaaa?

    1) we met through blogging, but i’m not sure who commented first :)
    2) i read this blog because you write well and your food hunts make me drool all the time.
    3) i have two fave posts: http://witsandnuts.com/2010/05/23/kulinarya-a-guide-to-philippine-cuisine/. this post had me hunting for this book bec i’m so curious to try the recipes in it. the second one is this: http://witsandnuts.com/2009/01/12/december-2008-ultimate-kapampangan-tour-1-of-3/. what can i say, i love Filipino food so much.

Oh you must be really mabait. I know that July 17th born are really goodhearted. My fave bro shares that birthday.

I have to think really hard how I discovered your blog. I think – not pretty sure – that it was thru PHOTO HUNT that I found you and your very global and universally themed blog. I first found your photos interesting (being primarily a photoblogger photos catch my eyes first) then the rest is history.

    Enjoy your birthday Cancerian. Cheers.

  26. Nomadic Pinoy says: July 14, 20101:17 am

First of all, happy birthday on your blog – there’s so much more ahead!
I’m not good at remembering so I can not unfortunately recall where I stumbled on your site but nevertheless, it was a serendipitous “meeting” I’m sure hahaha!
Your blog has enough variety in it to keep someone with short-attention span like me to keep on reading. I guess you know that already.
I don’t see any need for you to change the way you are – being what you are now online is already your face to the world.
I’d probably ask you if this meeting will merit a blog post hahaha!

  27. Rea Jane Balosbalos says: July 14, 20104:48 pm

Hello! Syempre sali ako dito :) :) :)
    Here are my answers…
    1. How did we meet? hmnn… thru our mothers? hehehehe
    2. Interesting, like your other blogs; with awesome pix, and of course the words “anniversary” and “birthday” are always inviting; so this must be worth reading
    3. Your Holy Week blog, because i think that was the one where some of my shots were included? and of course, because you were here with us.
    4. Something fictional…
    5. “Where are we gonna eat first?” hehehehe :)

  28. redlan says: July 14, 20107:52 pm

    1. I forgot how we met online. But I know we have the same circle of blog friends. Batch ka nila ni Sheng at Dyanie. Parang GIMIK lang naman. But one thing I can’t forget bout you is when you hired me to harvest your field of pineapples. Tulo-laway talaga ako sa pineapples. Tas nagpicture-taking pa tayo. Sobrang saya!

    2. I read your blog because it tackles general issues. And I like blogs that share personal experiences. I always get unique ideas, advices and awareness from your blog. Like what you’ve experienced sa airport. You are a versatile blogger for me.

    3. The adobo parade is the best post for me. It was a complete food package. The 8 faces of adobo. http://witsandnuts.com/2010/05/18/the-8-faces-of-adobo/#more-2888

    4. No need na siguro. What I think, you write. And you always surprise us readers. Updated ka palagi sa mga changes.

    5. Napaisip talaga ako sa tanong na ‘to. A question to ask a question. Funny nga dahil I came up to this question, “Nakailang BFs ka na?” Kidding. Pero eto na lang if ever we will meet I gonna ask, “Pwede magpa-picture? (Gaya dun sa ft) with matching autograph. It would be a memorable remembrance from you.

Advance Happy Birthday Jo! More blessings to come!

    (2) I read your blog because it imparts an interesting perspective of life … of a filipina working abroad … but most of all, i like reading it because it’s chock-full of positivity. seriously, i hardly ever read anything negative here ;-)
    (3) I can’t find the post Jo, but it was one of your first posts for the creative swap. It had the pic of your crochet set. I liked that post particularly because you spoke of how excited you were at reviving your creative soul ;-)
    (4) How about people? Stories/caricatures about the varied people you meet, discreetly cloaked in pseudonyms if you wish. Wala lang, its something I’m thinking of doing … it’d provide an interesting peek into life ;-)

    Jo, deary :)

Here’s hoooping I “win” this time:

    (1) How we met virtually and/or in person (I think the second one’s rare)

I remember it so well, Jo and her smile :) It was your first day at work, my first few months or so. We were both early birds. You greeted me first! And so it was love at first sight for moi :) Thanks, Jo, for that beautiful morning. And for all the rest of the mornings that you are a part of my life, that is, for life :)

    (2) Why you read this blog

Because although you don’t exactly blog your more personal stories (hear my clamor, hehe), it makes me feel OK that you’re OK, then I can sleep more soundly, naks, hehe. It just warms my heart hearing from you.

    (3) A link to your most favorite post from this site (and why)

It has got to be this: http://witsandnuts.com/2010/06/11/the-things-that-we-love/#more-3044

Why is it my fave? Let me count the ways:
    1. It is categorized under life and I am naturally drawn to life stories.
    2. I can so relate, being an immortal myself, hehe.
    3. It’s so Jo :)

    (4) Topics that you want me to write about/proposed changes to this blog

I wouldn’t want you to be any other than your good ol’ self, Jo, although this is too serious an answer, hehe. Hokey, since you’ve asked anyway, I wish you’d blog about your day to day inspirations…

    (5) “A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person.

Does this apply to me? Hehe. I emailed you a question before.. If you just didn’t receive it that’s why it’s unanswered, it’s the same question I would want to ask you. Otherwise, it’s “How are you? Really.” And I hope the setting is as cozy as when we had our last long talk at RCBC Plaza, remember?

Then, am gonna hug yah real tight!!! I really really missed you, my friend. I’m happy when you’re happy. But you know when you’re not, you just have to holler, hokey? We’re all here for you kasi lab na lab ka namin :) Happy birthday!!! God bless you and your family!

    P.S. Sana iPad ;-)

Jo: Not that I wanted to win the giveaways (pabulong: I’m just being manipis at this time), I would respond as follows:

    1. Honestly I don’t know. I think I saw your comment in Dennis Villegas’ blog.
    2. Because you take me to places where I haven’t been (and your photos are simply cool and life-like).
    3. Difficult coz your posts are always an interesting read. Siguro…http://witsandnuts.com/2009/11/03/mraz-ing/ – I made one for myself but I didn’t call Sting-ing but something like Stung by Sting.
    4. Changes in your blog? Para namang ako ikaw e. Ever-changing! Plus whatever you do naman with your blog — color it dark or light or gray — it always comes out beautifully-laid. I would like to continue reading about your work-and-play adventures in Dubai. Pero I love it more when you write something personally like this: http://witsandnuts.com/2010/06/11/the-things-that-we-love/#more-3044. Parang we get to know more of your personal side when you write like this.
    5. Hmmm….so who’s the lucky guy?

Congratulations, Jo, on your blogversary. Looking forward to reading more of you in the coming years.

    Happy happy birthday Wits =)
I’d want to join your giveaway activity, but I’d spare you for replying something for me, eto na lang gift ko ha, hehe. After all, I’m more excited to read all the surprises here (hoping ba to read something on #5s, naks).
On your birthday I wish you continued super powers to keep you the super girl you are =)
