Hello Kitty cake
(Source)

Whether you naturally fancy Hello Kitty or not, just like in my case wherein I’m a natural Snoopy, it’s close to impossible not to have been enchanted by the thought of owning Hello Kitty stickers, stationeries, cups, and other cute (yes, that’s the operative word) stuff at least at some point in a girl’s life. My random inventory tells me that I have a Hello Kitty trash bin (in the room), clutch bag, shirt and sweater. Lately, I’m scouting toppers like those in the above photo because I want to bake Hello Kitty cupcakes for someone’s birthday who likes this character a lot, so I can virtually send it to her while I consume it here (*insert facepalm*). Seriously, whenever I drop by in the Sanrio stores here in the UAE, Kayni is one of my blog pals that first zooms in my head.

Here goes my birthday wishes for her, and I wish for myself, too: that we remain childlike at heart, that our being childlike helps us in sustaining a good health, that we may find more time this year to catch up on reading and movie watching, and may we invest more on experiences instead of material stuff, travel that is.

This is my entry to Kayni’s birthday blog party.

2010 exchange gift
(Few days ago I sent the package to my exchange gift partner. I had to posterize this photo just to still keep the mystery. I hope she gets it before reading this post. I hope she will like everything in there, including the stuff which she never asked for especially the three Christmas playlists in the flash disk.)

I was thrilled when I learned that she-who-must-not-be-named is my exchange gift partner for our online kris kringle. (There is no way that she looks like Lord Voldermort; I am certain about that even though I have no idea at all what she actually is, except that I know the size of her feet, shoulder, even her brain and heart, i.e. she is smart and caring.) I thought that it would be easy to tick off the items from her wish list. But unfortunately, some items do not exist in my region and/or not possible at the moment. This got me thinking about my own wish list, which I thought would be workable.

Gift-giving is exciting for so many reasons . Personally, it is special because the entire process allows us to share a part of ourselves. From the time we thought about the person, to scouting the gift, to finding the alternate, and all that. At the end of the day, we are giving this person the gift of time. Whether we are working on a wish list or not, the process of picking the pieces of the puzzle is a wonderful experience. Since we are looking at things from different perspectives, we might think that an alternate piece or angle would be better. Truth be told, in this life, we will always receive something which we do least expect. Something which we never ever thought we would wish for. In this case, from someone at the other side of the globe whom we probably never had shared coffee talks yet, face to face.

At the end of the day, the old cliche will always be true, it is the thought that counts. This goes for my other exchange gift partner who might have had so much trouble in finding my Starwars chopsticks and other stuff. The gift of time is more than enough.

Top blogs in the UAE

You probably will notice a new badge on the sidebar. (*winks*)

I recently got an email from GoOverseas.com that this humble blog has been listed as 3rd of the top 10 blogs in the UAE. At the first spot is A Canadian in Abu Dhabi, authored by a journalist, whom is among my favorite Abu Dhabi bloggers. It is interesting to learn about the other (top) UAE blogs as well. Although my blog randomly tackles my varied interests, I am pleased that it has reached out to be engaging and informative to a reasonable extent. I realized though that I should take this opportunity to share more about the UAE, which is always a plan.

To GoOverseas.com, my loyal readers, and occasional stumblers, thank you for appreciating Wits and Nuts, just the way it is. :)

All I want for Christmas 2010 - Blogosphere

Since I am miles away from home and although confined in the breeze of a Muslim country, I am all the more excited for Christmas. It is one of the occasions that I look forward to because it revives and strengthens togetherness, aside from the many things, among families, friends, and the rest of the people whom I hardly know personally. This year will be extra different because I will take part in our modified form of kris kringle with some of the bloggers. The nicest thing here is that it has transformed into sort of community, i.e. through a common blogger pal, Prinsesa Musang (aka PM). Thanks to her for organizing this. I suggest that you take time to visit her blog, not only because I enjoin you to our swap, but also because her blog is a rare kind. It is like eating Pringles, once you pop, you can’t stop. In our mother tongue, hahanap hanapin mo.

As part of the gift giving mechanics, the “attendees” shall write their wish lists. It took me time to come up with my own and opted to create a collage for a quick assessment; I hope that this will help my swap partner (and whoever wishes to send me anything, and yes, I have a back up list! Just kidding) to figure out how to amuse me. Do not worry, I am generally easy to please. But maybe I am just being biased to myself. Haha. So, I will let you be the judge:

Something small: a souvenir jeepney replica (I think it is available in Kulturang Pilipino)
Something big: mix tape or cd of playlist(s) of your choice, I would like to know my swap partner’s hilig sa music (I think that it is figuratively a big wish, eh?)
Something cute: Starwars chopsticks or anything Starwars related except for the DVDs which I already got
Something soft: socks for sneakers
Something techie: skull candy headphone or iPad sleeve
Something fancy: Homestyle back issues (especially the one with Ely Buendia cover, please!)
Something blue (or insert your favorite color here): hair accessories (headbands, clips)
Something wearable: shawl
Something you need: charger organizer (Based on my research, it is available in Rustan’s)
Something you can use for work: journal which is Philippine-produced
Something sweet: Macadamia chocolates
All I Want For Christmas: I just want everyone to be happy. But my biggest wish to my swap partner (and to those who read my blog) is to write a letter to your parents and/or guardians and thank them about so many things. You don’t need to send me an evidence. I know that you will do it. Thank you. :)

I will probably spend two weeks in the Philippines in time for the Christmas and New Year, primarily to attend a good friend’s wedding in Bohol and LOTS of family gatherings and outings. I wish to give the liberty to my (still unknown) swap partner to send the haul to my UAE or Philippine address. In case you will make it before the cut off, I would be happy to open my gift during Christmas time (or maybe the minute Mr. Postman hands it over). But in case you will not and if unintentionally it reaches my Philippine address on the day of my flight back to UAE, do not worry, people back home will keep the package until I vacation for the 2011 Christmas or possibly for another wedding before that. Seriously, either way, I know that we will manage to receive/send it at a reasonable time.

To my swap partner, whoever you are, I thank you in advance.

As I mentioned initially, I was overwhelmed by the amount and quality of responses that got in. It was extra nice that it was during my birthday that I sorted through your account on how we have met, why you read this blog (thank you!), traced the links to your favorite posts, validated the topics that you want me to write about or the changes to this blog that you wish to happen, and honestly, I did not realize the “danger” of the fifth requirement when I wrote there: “A suntok sa buwan possibility”, the first thing/question you are going to ask me if we ever get to meet in person until I read your responses. Haha.

I really appreciate that you willingly embrace my no niche approach [i.e. my babbling about (almost) anything under the sun], which is not by intention. If you might have noticed, while the topics are unboxed, they are generally a reflection of my interests. And I try to write with no hard and fast rules, as much as possible, except that I do observe a sense of accountability for the veracity of things that I share even if I am writing under a pseudonym.
