Sometimes, it needs one odd event to conclude how you really felt. Excerpt from Lisa Marie Presley’s post after MJ’s death:

Years ago Michael and I were having a deep conversation about life in general.

I can’t recall the exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my Fathers Death.

At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, “I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.”

A predicted ending by him, by loved ones and by me, but what I didn’t predict was how much it was going to hurt when it finally happened.

I wanted to “save him” I wanted to save him from the inevitable which is what has just happened.

His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn’t know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then.

At that time, In trying to save him, I almost lost myself.

He was an incredibly dynamic force and power that was not to be underestimated.

When he used it for something good, It was the best and when he used it for something bad, It was really, REALLY bad.

The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow.

Any ill experience or words I have felt towards him in the past has just died inside of me along with him.

I also hope that anyone else who feels they have failed to help him can be set free because he hopefully finally is.

When one passes away, we choose to remember just the good memories and greatness of that person (no matter how few or many the circumstances are). It would be better to observe this in our day to day interaction, even if the person is still so much alive and kicking.

Full post of Lisa Marie Presley here.

Don’t miss this (tribute) remix of some of MJ songs. Really awesome.

You will notice that a few hours after publishing my entry ‘Hello Sunshine’, I made corrections to the artists’ name as follows:

Baby, I Love Your Way (UB40 Big Mountain)
Girl, I Wanna Make You Sweat (Bob Marley Inner Circle)
Don’t Worry, Be Happy (Bob Marley Bobby McFerrin)
Red, Red Wine (Bob Marley UB40)

I decided to use strikethrough to take note of our (usual) misconception. Being great, most of the reggae songs/versions are associated and a number of times credited to Bob Marley. It also happens that one group’s hit is merited to the other. That, of course, is not fair to the concerned artist(s).

When I wrote ‘Hello Sunshine’, I simply wanted to share one of the playlists (covering beach tunes-for my taste) I came up. I could have plainly listed the title of the songs without mention of the artist. But I did to particularly take note of the specific versions, since there could be more than one to too many (e.g. Baby, I Love Your Way). I based the information on iTunes. And it’s my habit whether work-related or not, to at least double check citations.

That early morning before going to the beach, I got an email from somebody, correcting four details in my entry (refer to the strikethrough). I cannot say that the timing was imperfect (imagine being corrected so early in the morning). At a quick glance, it could have ruined my beach mood. I initially wanted to ignore it and respond few days later primarily because I was about to head to the beach. But I gave in because there is something about the correction. The approach was respectful.

So after a few exchange of emails, and checking all the possible sources, googling, etc., I concluded that he is right (an understatement). A better way to announce it is that he has valid claims. To cut the story, I didn’t know that the person I was ‘peacefully debating’ with is indeed Robin Campbell, the singer guitarist of UB40. “But it’s based on iTunes, I checked You Tube, etc.”, I initially countered. Here’s a video of Red, Red Wine. Robin Campbell is the singer-guitarist in black sweater.

People in general keep an open mind. We don’t mind being corrected, as long as it’s valid and approached intelligently and humanely. As to giving due credits, I can just imagine how the artists/groups feel when their works are credited to someone else. This old age politics actually happens in our day to day interactions, in different forms.

On the other hand, in relation to my entry ‘Caveat on the resto’s name’ , I got a comment in my guestbook (which is still held for moderation) last December. It annoyed me for a second, but lucky me that I was too happy and busy that time (while on a trip in Hong Kong) that I was easily pacified and completely forgot it. Few days after that, I got a barbaric comment (through a post). After basic verification, it turned out that they are using the same IP address. I do not say that they are the same person, but it logically sounds like (i.e. the speech pattern, negative tone, etc.) that.

Here is the comment through the guestbook:

Dear Author/Administrator,

I have visited your site today and found out your article ‘caveat in resto’s name’ which is written under our competiotors inspiration to spoil our Image. Most of the statements are pejudiced and not true. Please note that we are not here to kill anybody or beat anybody. Our aim is just to do the buisiness for our (including our employees) survival only. We respect other businessmen eventhough you feel that they are our competitors. Please be understand that when similar business starts in any particular area of a city, normaly the business of all parties will increase and that area will be converted as a corner of that particular business.

So we request you to remove this article and photgraphs from the site immediately.

What? Asking me to remove my post and photographs? Are there any legal grounds? That I have written that to spoil their image? Rogie Mark has a very imaginative mind.

Anyway, here is the other comment from a certain Jennythm, who provided a non-existing email address and no URL:

UNFORTUNATELY I READ YOUR COMMENT AND DUE TO THAT ONLY I DIDN’T GO BARRIO FIESTA ABU DHABI UNTIL LAST WEEK WHEN MY COUSIN FORCED ME TO GO THERE. AFTER DINING FROM BARRIO FIESTA ABU DHABI INCLUDING YOUR SO CALLED ‘AWFUL KARE KARE’ WHAT I FELT WAS THAT YOUR COMMENTS ARE BIASED. (TO HELP SOMEBODY OR R U THEIR COMPETITOR IT SELF). I FELT THAT THE FOOD IS GOOD, PRICES ARE ECONAMICAL AND WHEN I WAS THERE THE RESTAURANT WAS PACKED ALSO.

I have not replied to these and have no intention. It is amazing how an informal restaurant review affected them. We know the power of word of mouth and blogging, but nothing is threatening enough if you are secure that your operations are good. Take Jollibee in Dubai for instance, it is not flawless but people go there because they like the food and for the feel of temporary easing up of homesickness. These are some of the must-be considerations of restaurants aiming to target the Kabayan market. I am not a professional blogger, but it is just a matter of going back to basics when we are sharing information (rendering food or any other review in particular). We need to find balance between tact and honesty. And which ever way you view it, there is always a better means to say it.

Further, there’s this rare instance of welcoming a commentator asking for (through the guestbook) KC Concepcion’s address because her University wants to invite her to an important affair in Iloilo. Another one asks for updates about Rob Pengson (of Chef To Go), claiming she’s googling about him and never found new information.

I never thought blogging is this fun. :) What about you? What are your not so usual encounter with the commentators/comments?

(Taken in March 2008)

I’m revisiting this lovely beach in less than 24 hours. I think it’s a good time to enjoy this kind of sunshine now before the real hot summer comes. Aside from beach paraphernalia and food, music is very important (I hope I won’t forget the mini-speakers). That means real beach tunes. I’m currently listening (to test the reasonableness of sequence) to the first mix/playlist which I named Beach Bop, which is good to keep us bubbly for the first 1.6 hours.

(1) Baby, I Love Your Way (UB40 Big Mountain)*
(2) Everything I Want (Steve Rushton)
(3) Here Comes The Sun (Beatles)
(4) Three Little Birds (Bob Marley)
(5) You To Me Are Everything (Ambelique)
(6) Turn The Lights Low Down (Bob Marley and Lauren Hill)
(7) Lala Means I Love You (Swing Out Sisters)
(8) Easy (Lemar and Lionel Richie)
(9) Stir It Up (Bob Marley)
(10) Bette Davis Eyes (Kim Carnes)
(11) Girl I Want To Make You Sweat (Bob Marley Inner Circle)
(12) I Melt With You (Jason Mraz)
(13) Walk This Way (Run D.M.C.)
(14) One Love (Bob Marley)
(15) Hoedown Throwdown (Miley Cyrus)
(16) Kokomo (Beach Boys)
(17) Everyday (Dave Matthews Band)
(18) Don’t Worry, Be Happy (Bob Marley Bobby McFerrin)
(19) Every Morning (Live) (Sugar Ray)
(20) The Locomotion (Beach Boys)
(21) Islands in the Streams (Bee Gees)
(22) The Doo Wa Ditty (Beach Boys)**
(23) I’m Yours (Jason Mraz)
(24) Red, red wine (Bob Marley UB40)
(25) Lovely Day (Mike Francis)

*I wanted to put in the four versions because they’re all good, but I opted for UB40′s Big Mountain’s for that sunnier-bubblier feeling (if you’re feeling romantic, you’d probably go for the acoustic one).
**Reminds me of Ang TV days

I’ve prepared other mixes to cover slow beach tunes, playlist named Beach Mush which includes Weekend in New England (Bossa Nova), If I Keep My Heart Out of Sight (James Taylor), Don’t Throw It All Away (Bee Gees), etc. Of course, Eraserheads and Dave Matthews Band mixes are ready and not to miss my Pinoy Lalala mix which includes a few songs from Boyfriends and Hotdogs. I’m looking forward to the listeners reaction when they hear Manila. Each time I hear that song, I’m feeling transported back there. Homesickness is both a happy and sad feeling.

Happy weekend, everyone.

March 8 collage

Just when I thought I was going to have my long wish three-day weekend, it just wasn’t meant to be so. For the unfamiliar, UAE has Friday and Saturday for its weekend. Yesterday (Sunday) was supposedly a non-working holiday for everyone, being the birthday of Muslims’ Prophet Mohammed. However, there was an announcement recall. Saturday became the non-working holiday for private sectors instead. Boohoo. I don’t really have work that day.

During the weekend, I got to watch this annual dance fest of one of the three Filipino schools in Abu Dhabi. This year’s theme is street dances. They’ve got livelier presentations this year. My favorites are the bangus dance for its choreography and costume, the ati ati han for the graceful main dancers, and these charming pupils in their sailor costumes. Incidentally, the Philippine Consul and Ambassador were there and announced that their offices are now open during weekends to make the absentee voting registration possible to everyone. Uhum, I think I have no more excuse.

Just like the preceding weekend, I spent a considerable amount of TV time. Over MBC, they lined up good films. While doing other stuff, I’ve got to see Ghost for the first time. No wonder it’s one of the best films in the 90s. Of course, its twin thought is the classic Unchained Melody. I also saw a bit of Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire. I was laughing out when I saw garlic as weapon for the vampire. Hollywood can be very Pinoy sometimes. While Sleepless in Seattle is charming as ever. The chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is one of a kind.

But the highlight of my TV time was my tuning in to Eat Bulaga. I’ve never seen this noontime show for more than a year now. But I did because of their tribute to Francis Magalona. It’s surprising to know how intense he is as a person and his influence in the music industry. They aired videos of some of his performances in early 90s. I was in elementary then and I remember ‘Mga Kababayan’ seemed like a national anthem that time.

I was in a jealous mode, too, last saturday. Again, I am miles away as Eraserheads did the Final Set concert. And it sounds like I’m not getting any chance soon. I read from a local newspaper that Ely Buendia signed a contract that they’re not performing again as Eraserheads for the next 10 years. I just contented myself with the video they aired as part of the tribute to Francis, his last live performance in Eat Bulaga (and with Ely) singing Super Proxy last October 25. Thanks to Karla for her Final Set concert posts (1 and 2). It made me feel like I was there, too.

I’m looking forward to the weekend (again). I can’t wait to watch the DVDs of Ghostbusters and other flicks that I scouted from my favorite multimedia store the other day.

If I’m there,

(a) I’d be attending this year’s Panagbenga. It must be special since Baguio City is celebrating its centennial year. It’s been three years since I’ve experienced one. I miss Session Road, I miss the pizza house near RCBC (no, not Shakey’s), I miss biking, I miss chilling, I miss strawberry pastillas, I miss checking the ukays without buying anything, I miss Good Shepherd’s Ube. And a lot more.

(b) I’ll definitely watch the Final Set concert of Eraserheads next month. I finally got a CD of their August 30 concert last December. I still feel goosebumps whenever I listen to the opening song Alapaap. I’ll just have to wait for the concert CD/DVD (again). This reminds me that I need to ask a friend who’s coming here next month to get a DVD of August 30 concert (released weeks after I went back here) + other stuff, as pasalubong to me. ;)

How funny, Ely with his current band Pupil went to Dubai on December 5 last year. They performed in Rakrakan with The Dawn and other bands. I was never interested. I thought I don’t just want a slice of cake, I want the whole cake.

After New Year, as I was switching channels I saw Ely in Sharon. I don’t watch Sharon but I did that day. Ely sung (with Pupil) Disconnection Notice. They’re good. Aah, I should have gone to Rakrakan.

(c) I’ll probably join the Ultimate Brothers’ Batanes Tour next month. I wish the same tour will be held again to coincide with my next vacation.
