Jay Alonzo Photo Journey Workshop in Antulang Beach Resort

I’ve been to Dumaguete in 2004 and given a chance, I’d like to revisit this lovely capital city of Negros Oriental. As I write this, I think of the inato and other delectable yummies, the serenity and spank combined in its many attractions, our wandering inside the Silliman University, the beach, and more. I wish I took plenty of photos that time because when I rechecked my limited captures, they were mostly about me and my workmates. That probably was the chapter in my life when I was more concerned about me being framed in the shot and not of the views. Recently, I learned that Jay Alonzo, our maestro in basic and food photography workshops will champion a ‘photo journey’ in Antulang Beach Resort from March 4 to 6, 2011.

Photography + Travel + Food + Great Photography Teacher + Company of Photo Enthusiasts + ? = Promising Photo Journey!

? = you!

Why a photo journey? This workshop is not only a travel photography because it will try to bring out the photographer in you. It will teach you how to to create photos that speak of your emotions, your idea, your story. It’s not just about image making…it’s the moment. Jay Alonzo will teach the participants to come up with images that need not much, if none at all, post processing and cropping images. If only I were in Manila or vacationing in Manila soon, I will definitely join in!

Housewarming
(This portion of the living room debuted here.)

I have moved in to a new flat which is nearer to my work place and covers a more economical lease agreement. Hence, one of the things that kept me busy as I returned from my vacation was the packing (and unpacking, ugh) of my stuff. I could have done it before I went on holidays to the Philippines, but I just did not want to stress myself that time. Anyway, moving out and in was a breeze. Thanks to my employer who recommended the movers who were very reliable when it comes to shifting stuff. If you are based in Abu Dhabi and need the same service, let me know.

Best Seller in the UAE bookstore, Magrudys 1
(Boxing in Ilustrado, a story of murder mystery punctuated with serious philosophical musings. The novel traces 150 years of Filipino history, posing questions about identity and art, exile and duty.)

I’m starting to lose faith in me whenever I’d say that I’m not going to buy another book until I’m done with my pending reads. I’m thankful to those who gifted me books for my last birthday. That way, fate finds a reason to bless me with fresh reads. The challenge with having to deal with pending reads is that I have the tendency to embrace the LIFO (last in, first out) methodology. Anyway, I dropped by in my most favorite bookstore in the UAE and was not able to resist buying Ilustrado which was authored by our very own Miguel Syjuco. It has been listed by New York Times as one of the 100 notable books of 2010.

On a lighter note, it was interesting to see a PacMan book, i.e. Behind the Scenes with Manny Pacquiao, The Greatest Pound-for-Pound Boxer in the World on the same display-shelf wherein Barack Obama, George Bush and Nelson Mandela were on. Aside from that boxing glove sticker I put on, another landmark is that he’s side by side Justin Bieber’s First Step 2 Forever.

Flower Salad from Bohol Bee Farm

While I don’t intend to make a list of my top eats on a monthly basis, I thought of making one in reference to my recent vacation in the Philippines. I can come up with a huge list, but I decided to point the following which are a combination of same-old and new tastebuds’ triggers.

Flower Salad [Bohol Bee Farm]. This organic garden salad is an assortment of freshly picked romaine lettuce, radish, turnips, mustard greens and of course the indigenous flowers. While it was not the first time I tasted a flower, it was a first when it comes to eating a bunch of flowers. All the petals tasted reasonably acceptable, especially that the honey mustard dressing was delicious. How to know if the flower is edible? I am still contemplating about the information shared by the guide (Bohol Bee Farm staff), that any flower being sucked by bees is not poisonous and therefore edible.

Sabangan Beach Resort, Laiya, San Juan, Batangas
(My brother took this photo during our post-Christmas outing in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas. We were with our family and relatives taking breakfast by the beach. It is amusing to see a rainbow after the early morning rain.)

While receiving an email from YOURSELF is strange, how weirder it could get when you hardly remember what made you write it. This one got in yesterday:

The following is an e-mail from the past, sent through FutureMe.org
It was composed on Monday, January 4, 2010, to be sent on Tuesday, January 4, 2011:
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

Dear FutureMe,

I am too stressed out right now due non-work stuff. I am trying to look like unaffected, but really the situation is eating me. To think that the year has just started.

I am still hopeful for a better 2010. Maybe this is just an extraordinary beginning of the year. And that the best is yet to come.

I’ll be found again,
witsandnuts

It took time for me to remember what actually was the situation a year ago. My email to myself sounded like the end of the world was near. I don’t maintain a physical diary and probably I just needed to let it out that minute because I couldn’t bear it just by myself but didn’t want opinion from anyone that I headed to FutureMe.org (i.e. you get to write letter to the future). I think I’ve written more than a couple of emails, the problem is I don’t remember anymore when I should receive them. I surmise that one will come after 5 years. In a way, hearing from my old self now excites me. I liked the (recurring) realization that the above email blessed me — I didn’t know that I was so scared about 2010, that the year didn’t start smoothly… but when I recollect, my 2010 concluded grandly and was actually one of my best years. In general, while a good start is ideal, we don’t give much weight how it kicked off, but how it finished.
