  • Watched Sherlock Homes. Brilliant actors, must-see film. I am looking forward to seeing the sequel.
  • I found myself wanting to join the children’s mass again. So I did. I became a little emotional when the children sung Shine Jesus Shine. I felt like transported to World Youth Day in 1995. It is a wonder how one song can affect you so much, that would make you think of places, people you met/have been with (I wonder where they are now. And do they think of me, too? Hahaha!), relive selected memories and experiences, etc. in a time warped phase. And that does not happen everyday.
  • Spent another day in Ikea to complete my dining table paraphernalia. I did not think it would be that difficult to match all those plates, table runner, etc. with a black and white motiff. It looks like a fusion of Japanese-Chinese-Korean setting.
  • Bought a painting (with a woman meditating on it) from Bayti (Arabic term for house). This now regales my living room. I still need to frame a couple of self-taken photos. They did not make it on time for the housewarming.
  • Yes, I moved in to a bigger flat because I got bigger. Hahaha. I mean, I moved to a nicer place. The past weeks were very exhausting. But finally, almost everything is at the proper corners already.
  • Yesterday, the housewarming was a success. My guests left with a happy heart and tummy (buttered crabs, my infamous lumpiang shanghai, menudo, etc.) Thanks for coming friends. And for the gifts. :)
  • Only yesterday I got the several mails sent to me last month, including the greeting cards sent by blogger pals (you know who you are). Incidentally, I have changed my address. Much thanks!

I always find it interesting to compare new and old pictures of places and people. Hence, in my most recent visit to Binondo Church, I wanted to capture the obvious changes that transpired based on available old photos in the net.

santo cristo de longos 2

We saw this shrine when we were passing by San Nicholas Street in Binondo. What piqued my interest is the presence of the crucifix and incense sticks at the same place. To add, there are also sampaguita garlands and structure of school of fish above the crucifix. At first glance, it is clearly a fusion of Christian and Chinese beliefs.

During the weekend, I missed the English mass at 9am. Yet I was too early for the one in Tagalog which is before 12 noon that I joined the children’s mass. (If you are new in Abu Dhabi, mass in different languages are celebrated in St. Joseph Church in Kaniza area.) I felt a little out of place in the beginning, i.e. like attending a class for pupils wherein I should be with college batchmates. I never thought it would be that awakening.

life-of-pi
Reading this book was like watching certain episodes from Tom Hanks’ Cast Away. Except that there’s a clever twist of representation from each character, especially of Piscine Molitor Patel (who’s nicknamed “Pi”; that of 3.14159 value in our Physics class) who is the sole human survivor in a cargo ship that sunk in the blue Pacific (Manila was mentioned on page 131*). It’s an uplifting and amusing story of how a 16-year old survived on the same boat with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger.

Given that the story is really inventive, hence bagging the 2002 Man Booker Prize for Fiction, one of my favorite chapters was pre-ship tragedy when he was exploring and experiencing test of faith. Although it’s not the actual case, but I felt the particular chapter was talking to me. As you probably know, I’m based in UAE wherein several religions are observed by different people (it’s a fact everywhere).  But in this part of the world, most of the people are Christians/Catholics, Muslims and Hindu.   I was nodding and non-maliciously smiling as I read this part:

Note: Without his parents and religious leaders knowledge, Pi embraces three religions and on that fateful day they coincidentally met in Salai seaside esplanade. That his secret exploded like a bomb.
