Hello Kitty cake
(Source)

Whether you naturally fancy Hello Kitty or not, just like in my case wherein I’m a natural Snoopy, it’s close to impossible not to have been enchanted by the thought of owning Hello Kitty stickers, stationeries, cups, and other cute (yes, that’s the operative word) stuff at least at some point in a girl’s life. My random inventory tells me that I have a Hello Kitty trash bin (in the room), clutch bag, shirt and sweater. Lately, I’m scouting toppers like those in the above photo because I want to bake Hello Kitty cupcakes for someone’s birthday who likes this character a lot, so I can virtually send it to her while I consume it here (*insert facepalm*). Seriously, whenever I drop by in the Sanrio stores here in the UAE, Kayni is one of my blog pals that first zooms in my head.

Here goes my birthday wishes for her, and I wish for myself, too: that we remain childlike at heart, that our being childlike helps us in sustaining a good health, that we may find more time this year to catch up on reading and movie watching, and may we invest more on experiences instead of material stuff, travel that is.

This is my entry to Kayni’s birthday blog party.

Cocktail Food Photography workshop Jay Alonzo
(More than pleased that I was able to capture the cocktail in this look, i.e. before the fruits emerged after few minutes it was served.)

If you are a regular to this blog, you probably can tell that majority of my photo subjects are food-oriented. I think that this topic has particularly sustained my interest in blogging. While I am no expert in taking food photos, I am happy whenever my snapshots succeed in making any reader mouthwatered and hungry (*grins*). At times, my own posts make me crazy-hungry. Unarmed with technical know-how, I only had one rule whenever I capture food photos whatever camera I do use: to capture it the way I want to remember it.  Until I’ve joined in the food photography workshop conducted by Jay Alonzo last weekend.

Flower Salad from Bohol Bee Farm

While I don’t intend to make a list of my top eats on a monthly basis, I thought of making one in reference to my recent vacation in the Philippines. I can come up with a huge list, but I decided to point the following which are a combination of same-old and new tastebuds’ triggers.

Flower Salad [Bohol Bee Farm]. This organic garden salad is an assortment of freshly picked romaine lettuce, radish, turnips, mustard greens and of course the indigenous flowers. While it was not the first time I tasted a flower, it was a first when it comes to eating a bunch of flowers. All the petals tasted reasonably acceptable, especially that the honey mustard dressing was delicious. How to know if the flower is edible? I am still contemplating about the information shared by the guide (Bohol Bee Farm staff), that any flower being sucked by bees is not poisonous and therefore edible.

Atlantis 6
Atlantis 5
(I liked how Christmas-y the colors of the noodles are.)

In response to invitation from friends, we have tried the dinner buffet in Saffron, Atlantis Hotel in Dubai. While I’ve taken a lot of food photos, I find these (contained in this post) the most appealing at this hour because of the hallucination it brought me.

Einstein and Strawberry shortcake chewy brownies

I feel guilty for not spending more time with the oven lately. Blame it on my work (heehee, that’s a joke, of course) and my other interests. Anyway, we had a potluck last week and I volunteered to bring the dessert. Since it’s the season to be jolly and even jollier, and eat more, here’s this easy fudge brownie recipe for you.

You will need:
1 cup butter
4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
2 cups white sugar
2 eggs if you like it fudgy and chewy (or 3 eggs if you want it to be cake-like)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan (or other pan size, in this case, I toyed and opted to use a heartshaped pan. In 3-quart saucepan over very low heat, melt butter or margarine and chocolate, stirring the mixture constantly. Remove from heat, and stir the sugar into the chocolate. Allow the mixture to cool slightly. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour and salt; stir into the chocolate mixture. Fold in the walnuts. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake in oven for 30 minutes. Brownies are done when toothpick inserted into center come out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack.

To add some colors, I put the same kind of sprinkles I used for the Disney princesses cupcakes. On to a geek cum childlike mode, I used Albert Einstein‘s and one of Strawberry Shortcake’s friends’ figures as toppers.

On a happy note, a friend is on her first trimester of pregnancy and was craving for the same brownie. I willingly whipped an extra share for her. I hope the baby’s complexion will not be brownie-like, but that he or she will get the sweetness and cheerful spread a brownie can exude. ? ? ?
